And then there were two.
U US Open, golf’s penultimate major in replacement PGA Tour schedule, is underway in September and without fans, two deals that will make for a surreal weekend sandwiched between the Tour Championship, entitled Dustin Johnson the FedEx Cup champion, and and Masters, the crown jewel of all majors scheduled for November.
Johnson, who won the US Open in 2016, is the clear favorite to win at the famous Winged Foot Golf Club. The No. 1 ranked golfer in the world ended the season with a tear, winning two of the three FedEx Cup playoff tournaments and tying for second in the PGA Championship in August.
On the field are also Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas, considered the two biggest threats to refresh Johnson, and Gary Woodland, the 2019 champion, and Tiger Woods, who enters the weekend on a long-term basis. A notable absence is Brooks Koepka. The champion twice withdrew from the tournament due to coronavirus problems.
The U.S. Open, originally scheduled for June 18-21, was one of more than a dozen PGA tournaments postponed from spring and summer due to the COVID-19 fire, a list that also includes the PGA Championship and and Masters. Golf’s main quarter, the British Open, has been canceled entirely.
