Hulu is the first major transmission platform to offers an experience of social observation. And with most major league sports now allowed to resume behind closed doors, Hulu’s combined offer with ESPN will likely help keep the service going. 30+ million users over the winter months.
But users have a surplus in choosing streaming services now, so how will it be Hulu are you competitive
With the help of UX expert Peter Ramsey yes Built for Mars, we’ll give Hulu an Extra Crunch UX patch, demonstrating five ways you can improve your overall user experience. These include easy product comparisons, consistent widths, proportional progress bars and other suggestions.
Compare the features in the packages
If your product / service has different levels / versions, make sure that the differences between these options are obvious and easy to compare.
Failure: Hulu has four different packages, but the features listed are inconsistent between options, making it incredibly difficult to compare. Instead of using bullet points, they buried the benefits in paragraphs.
To fix: Divide the paragraphs into bullet points. Next, make sure the bullet points are spelled consistently between options.
Steve O’Hear: I’m really surprised this is past the marketing department. Not much to say except that I would say that when UX, including layout and editing decisions, become detached from business objectives and what the customer wants, a company is in trouble. Do you agree that is what happened here?
Peter Ramsey: Honestly, this happens all the time. I think it’s just a feeling of designers building things that look beautiful, not things that work well. It probably raises this problem about about a third of the private checks I do – it’s so common.
Maintain a consistent width
Try to maintain a uniform page width throughout a single trip – unless there is a major benefit to changing the width.
Failure: During the Hulu registration process, the width of the page doubles to a totally useless point. This is disorienting for the user, with no obvious logic.
The solution: Hulu has a fairly consistent first half of its journey and then drops the ball. I will resize these “extra-wide” pages to be the default width.
