Cubs’ Joc Pederson hit a home run and scored — a sweet waffle maker

Waffle makers for rakers.

Joc Pederson came through on Wednesday afternoon with his first hit of the 2021 season, a home run, his first in a Cubs uniform. Pretty humdrum stuff, altogether, for the start of a baseball season.

But Pederson returned to the dugout to some celebratory high fives, butt pats and, most importantly, a waffle maker:

That’s right, a full-on waffle maker.

In case you’re new to Cubs baseball, Chicago’s Ian Happ has been using the waffle maker as a celebratory prop in the dugout since 2018. In baseball terms, “waffling” a pitch means making great contact with it.

The Cubs lost 4-2, but Pederson was appreciative of the gift.

“I hope we’re making a lot of waffles. Hopefully we’re passing out waffles soon to all of us,” he said after the game.

Baseball has fun home run celebrations: We’ve seen the silent treatment, bubble machines and a dance tunnel. The waffle maker is here to stay.
